Maldives approves tax hikes on tourism to boost revenue and sustainability
The Maldives has passed amendments to raise taxes and fees associated with tourism. On November 5, 2024, President Mohamed Muizzu approved changes to the Tourism Act, the Value Added Tax Act, and the Taxes and Fees on Passengers Departing.
John Keells Group unveils Cinnamon Life at Colombo’s “City of Dreams”
John Keells Group has launched Cinnamon Life, a landmark mixed-use development in Colombo, Sri Lanka, designed to elevate the city’s status as a prime South Asian destination. Situated along the Beira Lake waterfront, Cinnamon Life spans four towers that include an 800-room luxury hotel, premium office spaces, residential apartments, and a retail and entertainment complex. This $1 billion project aims to serve as a hub for business, leisure, and entertainment, appealing to both local and international visitors.
Sikkim's Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has decentralised the Protected Area Permit (PAP) system to improve access to Nathula Pass and Tsomgo Lake. Starting September 24, 2024, 50 daily vehicle permits will be issued through district tourism offices.
Maharashtra's tourism department has launched a fleet of 20 electric buses to transport tourists to the Ajanta Caves, aiming to provide hassle-free and eco-friendly travel. The first bus was commissioned on World Tourism Day. The buses will shuttle visitors from the parking lot to the cave complex, eliminating long wait times previously caused by diesel buses. The fleet includes both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses with a capacity of 14 to 22 passengers.
The newly opened Holiday Inn Resort Kathmandu Budhanilkantha is the first of its kind in Nepal, joining IHG Hotels & Resorts' renowned Holiday Inn brand. Located near the Shivapuri forest foothills, just a short drive from Kathmandu's city center, the resort offers a blend of natural beauty and urban convenience.
Daily non-stop Air India flights between Bengaluru-London Heathrow
Tata-owned Air India has begun a daily non-stop flight between Bengaluru and London Heathrow, connecting all three of its India hubs to the UK’s busiest airport. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, featuring 18 flatbeds in Business Class and 238 Economy seats, will enhance Air India’s weekly capacity to Heathrow by 3,584 seats. Air India already operates 31 weekly flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Heathrow and 12 weekly flights to London Gatwick. Additionally, following its merger with Vistara, the airline will adopt the ‘AI2’ code for Vistara-operated flights.
The Leela unveils ultra-luxury Villas at The Leela Palace Udaipur
The Leela has launched Arq by The Leela, an exclusive collection of ultra-luxury villas at The Leela Palace Udaipur, designed for the discerning elite. Offering a hyper-personalized experience, each villa combines contemporary luxury with Indian heritage, featuring brass inlaid wooden floors, Thikri artwork, and lapis stones.
The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has launched 83-key Yarkay Thimphu, a SeleQtions property in Bhutan, offering a unique blend of traditional Bhutanese culture and modern luxury. Located in the heart of Thimphu, this hotel aims to provide an immersive experience for both business and leisure travellers. The property offers carefully designed rooms, local cuisine, and sustainable tourism initiatives. Yarkay Thimphu adds to IHCL's expanding presence in Bhutan, enriching the hospitality landscape while offering guests an authentic experience.
Air France and KLM boost India operations with 11 new flights
Air France and KLM have expanded their India operations, increasing weekly flights from 39 to 50. The additional 11 flights will serve Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, with a focus on enhanced comfort through the Airbus A350, Boeing 777, and Boeing 787. Air France has also added a second weekly flight.
Maldives introduced a new Tobacco Control Act effective from 15th December 2024
The Maldives has introduced stringent regulations effective December 2024 under its amended Tobacco Control Act to combat tobacco use and its health impacts. The act completely bans the import, sale, and use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Tobacco sales are now restricted to individuals aged 21 and above, with mandatory age verification. Public tobacco use is prohibited in government and business premises, with penalties for violations. Additionally, all forms of tobacco advertising, sponsorship, and public displays of products are outlawed.
Jaipur’s Nahargarh Biological Park opens up for tiger safaris
Rajasthan has launched a new Tiger Safari at Nahargarh Biological Park, enhancing its wildlife conservation efforts. Inaugurated by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, the safari spans 30 hectares and features a 7 km track for tiger sightings. The park also saw the naming of two tiger cubs, Skandi and Bheem. This initiative is expected to boost tourism and raise awareness for tiger protection.
