Dear Industry Colleagues:

dramatic losses in business countrywide. We shall keep you posted as
things unfold.
You shall see some new and exciting initiatives in the next
season from Team Creative. New experiential inclusions, new
circuits, new concepts... We take pride in our ability to make
a trip to the Indian sub-continent something very different.

lands of Kutch creates a mosaic of exquisiteness which reflects the
identity and spirit of the region. Kutch, one of the most
ecologically and ethnically diverse district of the state is a
celebratory land of art, crafts, music, dance, people and nature.
During the full moon night of the winters amid the awe-inspiring and
contrasting landscape each year a three day festive extravaganza
brimming with hospitality, vigor and traditional flavor of the area
is hosted and known as the Kutch or Rann Mahotsav.

Update on Tiger & Tourism
Extending the ban on
tourism in core tiger reserve areas till September 27, the Supreme
Court today indicated it was not averse to permit regulated tourist
activities, subject to the Centre evolving suitable revised
guidelines to protect the dwindling tiger population.
A bench of Justices A K Patnaik and Swatanter Kumar granted four
weeks to the Centre to evolved the fresh guidelines after
consultations with states, all stake-holders, hotel associations
affected by the ban, guides and tour operators.
On July 24, the Supreme Court had banned all tourism activities in
the core tiger reserve areas. The government sought permission to
revise the existing guidelines to ensure that tigers were protected
even while tourism is promoted.
During the nearly hour-long hearing, on August 29, the bench asked
the Centre whether the existing tiger conservation guidelines
envisage a complete ban on all activities inside core areas. The
Centre submitted that the rules provided for 20 per cent activities
inside the core areas.
"There seems to be some kind of clash, some kind of difference of
opinion between Centre and the states. Please ensure these are
resolved. Also identify which activities shall be allowed and not
allowed inside core areas," the bench observed adding it wanted
comprehensive guidelines to promote both growth of tiger population
and regulated tourism.
"There is always a watch when tourism is allowed. If there is no
tourism there will be no humans to watch the tigers. Poachers will
immediately be caught by tourists and the guides. Poachers actually
work undercover. If no tourists are allowed, it will be a field day
for poachers," the bench told Attorney General GE Vahanvati, who
agreed with the observations.
Senior counsel Dushyant Dave, appearing for states like Rajasthan
and Madhya Pradesh, urged the court to immediately lift the ban to
ensure that the parks are opened by October 1, 2012. The counsel
cited instances of Uganda, Kenya and certain other countries to
claim that tourism regenerates wildlife and that there was no
justification for the ban.
The Centre had earlier filed an affidavit seeking permission to
review the existing guidelines for conservation of tigers in the
wake of the court's order banning tourism in core areas of tiger
reserves.
Nearly six lakh people, directly or indirectly, depend on
tiger-tourism for their livelihood. India has 41 tiger reserves with
over 1700 tigers.

Kerala Tourism Department formulates plan to make Kovalam garbage-free
As part of its ‘Kerala Waste Free Destination campaign, the Kerala Tourism Department, along with Suchitwa Mission, is looking to undertake a project to make Kovalam a garbage-free destination. The project is awaiting clearance from the government. Under the project, residential areas will be offered 25 per cent subsidy on biogas plants and various composting technologies. A package incorporating methods of management of waste, including vermin, ring and pipe composting, has been developed. However, convincing hotels to implement the project is a challenge. "No decision has been taken regarding allocation of subsidy to hotels as they have been mandated to set up waste treatment plants by way of Kerala Municipality (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2011. The best we can do is to check that the hotels adhere to the law," George Chakacherry, Executive Director, Suchitwa Mission, was quoted as saying in a report by The Times of India. |

Sahara Group lines up another prestige property
In a few months, visitors to Red Fort will be able to walk along the original pathways envisioned by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, connecting Diwan-e-Aam with Naubat Khana.
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has almost completed the process of recreating the Mughal pathways between these two structures, alongside the forecourt of Diwan-e-Aam. Currently, visitors walk through the western gateway
- Lahore Gate - leading to Chhatta Bazaar and then cross the Naubat Khana to follow the central axis into the Diwan-e-Aam. But ASI officials say the central axis is a British construction, not in keeping with the original layout of the fort. |

Leela Palace to open in Chennai
Leela Palace Chennai is set to open in September 2012. This sea
front hotel has been built to reflect the grandeur of the Chettinad
Palace architecture. Set amidst 6 acres on the Adyar Sea face it
overlooks the Bay of Bengal. The hotel is in close proximity to the
central business districts, so for our clients it is located away
from the typical sightseeing locations but for some clients that
will be a small compromise for such luxury. 326 rooms and suites in
what is the only sea front luxury hotel in Chennai, with typical
Leela buzz, bling and service this is likely to be a big hit for
leisure travellers but especially the business traveller. |

CGH Mahe-de-Malabar (opening)
After the success of Maison Perumal, the Casino Group of Hotels (CGH)
is set to open their 2nd property in Pondicherry this September.
Mahe de Malabar is located in the original French quarter of
Pondicherry, and will have 18 huge rooms. Room categories are yet to
be decided, but the rooms on the 2nd floor have a partial sea view
and the ground floor rooms with pool view. The roof top restaurant,
serving a specialty seafood menu, has a great view of the sea (a
multi-cuisine restaurant will be located on the ground floor). This
will surely be our number one choice in Pondicherry in coming
seasons, especially given that the CGH service standards will be in
place. They have started taking bookings from Sep’12 onwards but no
information online yet. A full review will be available once the
property launches officially. |

New budget carrier planned for Kerala
The government of Kerala has announced plans to launch a new low cost airline, Air Kerala, connecting the state to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The new airline, which will be operated under private public partnership from Cochin International Airport, will primarily serve NRI’s living in the Gulf region. Parliamentarian Mohammed Bashir, told Times of Oman in Muscat; "During peak seasons, they have shell out huge amounts to purchase air tickets. So, the government of Kerala
is moving ahead to start its own airline.' The venture is now
waiting on final approval from the central government and should be formally introduced at the Emerging Kerala
investment meeting, scheduled from 12 September. The airline was
conceived five years ago, but has failed to get approval from the
central government as the proposal did not meet the criteria for
operating international services. Such an airline would need a
minimum fleet size of 20 aircraft and must have had five years of continuous operations in
the domestic sector.

Jaipur Runway work likely to be
delayed
The Airports Authority of India’s (AAI) had in July announced
closing the Jaipur airport runway between 11 am and 6 pm for 18
months starting October 28, 2012. The authority made the
announcement so that work to increase the length of the runway could
be undertaken. The runway, the only one of the airport, handles 20
domestic flights daily. However, the AAI order was reversed by the
civil aviation minister Ajit Singh after MPs from Rajasthan brought
the matter to him. The runway, according to plan, would have
remained open during the night impacting no international flights -
the airport caters to 13 international flights a week compared to
140 domestic flights weekly. “How can they close the runway during
the day for 18 months and impact around 20 domestic flights in a
state that is tourism-driven," said a senior civil aviation ministry
official on condition of anonymity. "Majority of the traffic at the Jaipur airport are domestic passengers and the airport operator
overlooked them," the official said. Ijyaraj Singh, MP from Kota in
Rajasthan, who met the minister on this issue, said that the impact
on tourism was not the only reason for concern. “I’m from Kota and
Jaipur is the nearest airport for people from this region. Closure
would have impacted air connectivity to a large part of the state,"
the MP added. "There is a need to increase the length of the runway
but that can wait till the end of the winter schedule (till
March-end)," said an AAI official based in Jaipur. Now, the work at
the Jaipur airport has been planned to be carried at night starting
from April 2013 to ensure minimum disruption of flights. |

Aviation Boom in India
Indian aviation is again having a moment after about four years of skulking in the corners of a slowdown. Captain GR Gopinath, the man who gave us air travel on a platter, has return to the aviation business for a third time by launching a regional airline in Gujarat last Monday. The airline, Deccan Shuttle, have started 12 flights a day between nine cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Kandla with five 12-seater Grand Caravans. All these cities were connected to Mumbai by air, but had no services between them. Gopinath's last venture coincides with a series of launches of small and regional airlines in India. Air Mantra, a unit of financial services conglomerate Religare Group, has started daily flights connecting Amritsar and Chandigarh in July
2012. Likewise Spirit Air, which provides service to Jamshedpur and Ranchi from Kolkata, plans to reach out to tourist destinations such as Gaya and Kushnagar later this year. Waiting in the wings are Karina Airlines, Volk Air, Air Freedom and Akashganga Airlines, among others. Non-resident Indians in the Gulf are about to resurrect plans to launch a carrier called Air Kerala that will connect the state to the Middle-East. |
