Next Saturday is also "Diwali", the festival of lights. Diwali, or Deepavali, perhaps the best-known Hindu festival, marks the end of the season that opens with Dussehra. Diwali is celebrated throughout India, as well as in Indian communities throughout the diaspora. It usually takes place eighteen days after Dusshera in October/November. Diwali is called the "festival of lights", and the name itself means an array of lamps (Deep = Lamp, Vali =Array). Indeed, illumination is characteristic of Diwali. The array of lamps are symbolic of welcoming Lord Rama back to Ayodhya after his 14 years of exile, and the common practice is to light small oil lamps, diyas, and place them around the house. Diwali is celebrated for five continuous days and each day has its significance with a number of myths, legends and beliefs.

If there is one occasion that is full of joy and jubilation for all, it is Diwali. Homes are spring-cleaned and decorated with multi-coloured rangoli designs and floral decorations adorning the entrances. Even the humblest of huts are lit by a row of earthen lamps. Celebrations are accompanied by the exchange of sweets and the explosion of fireworks. Diwali has the same importance for Hindus as Christmas does for Christians.

India retains its position in the league of the Top 5 travel destinations in the world

According to the 2006 Readers’ Travel Awards announced by Condé Nast Traveller UK, India has been ranked as the 4th top travel destination, up from 5th position last year. India has steadily moved up to 4th position this year from 10th position in 2003. Kate Slesinger, Publisher, Condé Nast Traveller UK, said “This first class performance is largely attributable to the hard work and enthusiasm, which India has put into marketing itself to the outside world. It is also due to the fact that, as a leisure destination, India delivers what it promises : a diverse and fascinating culture, superb quality in its resorts and an unforgettable experience, which is never the same twice. No wonder India is the word on every sophisticated traveler’s lips.”

Parliament Museum inaugurated
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated The Parliament Museum located in the Parliament Building. The museum has been designed as a hi-tech story-telling complex where the story of the "Democratic Heritage in India" will be told with the help of walk-through period settings backed by sound-light-video synchronisation, large screen interactive computer multi-media and multi-screen panoramic projections, virtual reality and animatronics. This museum is different in the sense that it is not a museum of objects but of events. Under the project, visitors will be able to watch a short film on the election system of the country and get a `virtual' first hand experience of being in the chambers of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha and take part in the proceedings of the two Houses. Another major attraction of the museum is the recreated Central Hall of Parliament where a computer-controlled animation will show Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru delivering in his original voice the historic `Tryst with Density' speech that he read out on the midnight of August 14-15, 1947.

MV Sukapha to debut in October

The cruises here also give access to a number of India's National Parks, including Kaziranga, perhaps the finest of all, and Manas, a Project Tiger Reserve on the Bhutan border. In the summer of 2007, "Sukapha" will be pioneering a new cruise programme on the River Hugli between Kolkata and the Ganges. Here on this more intimate waterway the emphasis is on monuments and culture, whether Hindu, Muslim or Colonial. The maximum group size is 24.
