India making headway as ski destination
INDIA’s Solang Valley, located in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh, is fast gaining a reputation as a ski holiday destination. Accessible from New Delhi by road or flights to nearby Bhuntar Airport, the valley hosted the inaugural Alpine Premier League skiing competition in February, and is likely to be added as a regular feature in the international skiing events calendar. In addition to skiing, Solang Valley boasts other outdoor activities such as paragliding, mountain biking and snowmobiling. The other popular ski resort in India is Gulmarg in Kashmir, which is accessible from New Delhi and Srinagar. Bjorn J. Sjursen, managing director, Metro Tours Norway said: “We can motivate a large number of clients to combine a ski holiday with beach or cultural tours of India. It will be exciting to ski in the
Himalayas.said a spokesperson from the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India said: “We have to upgrade our ski destinations into ski resorts by adding high quality hotel rooms, F&B, good medical care and other facilities that are taken for granted in the French, Swiss and Italian Alps and Colorado. We must create a Brand Himalaya.” |

India to extend VoA to European countries
India will now get more accessible for international tourists. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has approved the Visa on
Arrival (VoA) for three more European countries of France, Germany and Russia. So far, India offered visa
on arrival facility to 11 countries. Confirming the development to
the Times of India, MEA sources said the decision would help the government in meeting its objective to double international tourist arrivals in the next three-four years. With the inclusion of France and Russia, it will be the fi rst time that the policy will cover P5 countries. "After the MEA's nod, the proposal has been sent to the Union home ministry as the fi nal tourist visa on arrival clearing authority is its Bureau of Immigration. But that is a mere formality," said a source, adding that there was a consensus among all the ministries in extending the policy to these three countries. The visa on arrival facility is also soon likely to be extended for nationals from six more countries, including Spain and Malta. India currently issues VoA to 11 countries like Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines , Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam , Singapore, Myanmar, Finland, Luxembourg and New Zealand. |

Maharashtra govt planning to promote state as Wine Tourism destination
The Maharashtra government is planning a tourism makeover for the state in order to promote it as India's first Wine Tourism destination. Many measures as part of this master plan, including the opening of wine bars and cafes at tourist spots, and state-run luxury trains and resorts, were announced by the Maharashtra Excise and Tourism departments recently.
The state plans to set up wine art galleries, museums, clubs and resorts with the help of winery owners. A government magazine will also be brought out on the qualities of the state's wines, as per a report by Sharad Vyas in The Times of India. "The plan has received an in-principle approval from the Tourism and Culture department. To make the process of setting up bars and cafes easier, licence fee exemptions will be given to wineries that come forward to be a part of the states plan," a senior official said.
Nearly 72 wineries across the state account for 80 per cent of India's wine production, with Nashik being the wine capital of the country. However, after the 2008 terror strikes in Mumbai, there was a drop in tourist inflow to the state and Mumbai. Average consumption too witnessed a slump.
A delegation of unit owners met Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra with their demands which included exemptions in licence fee and VAT charges imposed on sales of wine, as well as a rehabilitation package for affected units and grape farmers. While the state government turned down requests for financial help, it decided to help units set up wine factory sale outlets.

E-eye to tab Corbett tigers
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has launched a pilot project in Uttarakhand's Jim Corbett National Park for round-the-clock surveillance of the park using high definition cameras. The project E-eye is a software-based system where 10 high-resolution thermal and infra-red cameras mounted on a tower are spread across the area of the park.
"It is for the first time in the world that a surveillance system of this type is being used in any national park. The project was launched some five-six months back to check poaching of tigers in the park," SP Yadav, Deputy Inspector General of Forests and Joint Director of NTCA was quoted saying by the Times of India.

The Toy Train Returns - With A New Engine At Bal Bhavan, New Delhi
New Delhi: After a gap of six years, the joyride on a toy train has returned to the National Bal Bhavan
- even though as trial runs for a new diesel engine.
A major attraction for children and adults alike, the steam engine-pulled toy train service was suspended in 2006 after its driver retired.
The train rides at the Bal Bhavan started in 1958 when the then prime minister, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru gifted the steam engine to the Bhavan.
In 2007, the steam engine, built by Messrs Krauss Maffic AG, was declared irreparable. The Bhavan got the new diesel engine in 2010, but had no driver.
Finally, the Northern Railway has agreed to loan the Bal Bhavan one of its Rajdhani drivers, who retired from service on April 30. With all requirements met, the Bhavan plans to resume the train rides soon.
A huge crowd of children and adults waited inside the Bhavan, hoping to get a ride on the new train. Such was the excitement that the train operator was forced to skip a few of the designated stops to prevent people from boarding the already crowded train.
Director of National Bal Bhavan Gaya Prasad said: "There was no train running when I joined. We had no driver. I saw the charm of the mini-train ride among children when I asked a technician to take a trial. Since a technician cannot run a train, we persuaded the Railways to give us a driver. We hope to get a driver in this week."
Prasad is also the Director of School Education under the HRD Ministry.
It has been a month since a technician has been taking the diesel engine-run toy train on trial runs.
"When we went to Mysore to take the engine, the railway officers gave us some training on operating trains. We are using the training for the trials, which started after the new director joined," said an official at Bal Bhavan. |

Jaipur Band To Add Music To Olympic Torch March
The famous Jaipur Kawa Brass Band all set to perform at Shrewsbury and Belfast in the United Kingdom during the Olympics next month, according to a news item in The Hindu.
Adding music to the march of the Olympic torch in Belfast in the United Kingdom this June will be Jaipur Kawa Brass Band, which will also be accompanied by Kawa Musical Circus. The participation by the Indian music group, founded by Hameed Khan Kawa in 1996, is at the invitation of the British Council.
"It is great pleasure to have the two Indian groups accompanying the Olympic torch throughout the streets of Belfast City on June 13, 2012," said the invitation from the British Council. The event will take place at various locations in Belfast. The Jaipur Brass Band and Musical Circus will also be performing at Shrewsbury (UK) with the Olympic torch on May 30, at the invitation of Access All Areas.
"I have created a special composition 'Melody Hans Dhwani' with 15 beats for the occasion. Hans Dhwani is played when you are in celebration, in jubilation," said the 50-year-old Hameed Khan, who hails from a village near Amber Fort. "I have also linked acrobatics and street performances to the band's music," Mr. Khan, who lives six months of the year in Europe performing, said talking to The Hindu.
"Acrobatics is getting endangered. So is the case of brass band, which is played only for marriages in North India. I have done some improvisation of the brass band played at the weddings. Brass is a very strong sound. People like it for its strength," said Mr. Khan, who had made Paris his home for 15 years in the past.
"I created the Kawa Musical Circus three years back. It takes care of both the acrobatics and the music that traditionally goes with it. There is great energy in the acrobatics and its music, which is earthy," he said.

Bhopal: After tying up with Ventura and launching intra-state charter air service with small planes, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Corporation (MPTC) is planning to join hands with Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited (PHHL) to kick off chopper service in the sprawling state according to a newsitem in The Times of India.
"We have successfully launched air-connectivity between from Bhopal to Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Rewa and Khajuraho and now looking forward to tie up with PHHL to start off helicopter service," MPTC chairman Mohan Yadav said.
Right now Ventura Air-connect is flying single engine nine-seater in Madhya Pradesh.
"If all goes well, we plan to station choppers in the state capital, Indore and other places and fly tourists to tiger reserves, famous Pachmarhi hill station and other destinations," MPTC general manager R P Chauhan said. Jammu and Kashmir government is already airlifting the passengers with the help of helicopters to promote religious tourism, he added.
Chauhan said that they were in contact with PHHL and trying hard to launch the chopper facility, adding that it would be a huge hit if shaped properly. "Tourists love to see tiger and MP's parks are having the striped animal in abundance. Even the industrialists would be attracted towards the state," he said.

China bans Tourism to Tibet
by Audley Wozniak and Gloria Riviera from Beijing
In a matter of days, the number of expected foreign visitors to
Tibet has gone from millions to zero.
Chinese authorities alerted foreign travel agencies Tuesday that
they would no longer be issuing entry permits to Tibet,
the latest in a series of regulations being put on travelers to
Tibet. The announcement follows the self-immolation of two Tibetans
last week.
Tibet is no stranger to Chinese interference in its tourism
industry. Tibet's failed rebellion in March 1959 and the event's
annual memorial on National Uprising Day has chronically put the
region at odds with the People's Republic of China. In 2008,
protests after National Uprising Day turned into riots that were met
with violence by PRC forces. The Chinese government temporarily
closed Tibet to foreign visitors. That is a now-annual practice in
March, and during other national events significant to the Chinese
government.
Now, many are saying that the latest in a string of Tibetan
self-immolations led to the country's shutdown to outsiders.
According to Free Tibet, a campaign promoting Tibetan independence
from China, there have been more than 30 self-immolations since
March 2011. Most recently, on May 27, 2012 two Tibetans were the
first to set themselves on fire in Lhasa, Tibet's tightly-controlled
administrative capital.
The shutdown also coincides with the Saga Dawa festival, which
celebrates the Buddha's birth and draws many Buddhists to Tibet.
This year, the festival began on June 4, which is also the
anniversary of the Chinese government crackdown on the Tiananmen
Square protests.
While many tourism agencies have learned to adapt and predict the
trends on tourism bans, this closure comes as something of a shock.
According to a China based agent,
Chinese authorities informed the company in mid-May that travelers
would only be allowed to visit Tibet in groups of five people of the
same nationality. Last week, the government stopped issuing entry
permits to Tibet altogether. Only
those Chinese nationals are allowed to enter the region.
The loss of income for Tibetan communities is significant. Tibet
received 21.25 million domestic and foreign tourists in between 2006
and 2010, generating $3.58 billion in income for the country.
Tourism is a staple of the region's economy. Tibet set a goal to
increase tourism revenue between 2011 and 2015 to more than 20
percent of its gross domestic product.
The Chinese government's recent actions will make reaching 2012
targets difficult. |

Pullman Gurgaon Central Park Is Accor's 500th Hotel In Asia-Pacific
The opening of Pullman Gurgaon Central Park represents a double milestone: the debut of the Pullman brand in India and the establishment of Accor's 500th hotel in Asia-Pacific.
Accor today reaffirms its position as largest international hotel operator in Asia-Pacific with the opening of the Pullman Gurgaon Central Park, the Group's 500th hotel in the region. The announcement also marks the debut of the upscale Pullman brand in India.
Speaking on this milestone, Denis Hennequin, Accor's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, says, "I am very pleased with this dual milestone for Accor in Asia-Pacific, which reaffirms our position as the leading operator of hotels in this key growth market and anchors our growth ambitions for the region. It is very appropriate that we are celebrating our 500th hotel in Asia-Pacific in India, which is a market that provides a significant growth opportunity for Accor building on the foundations that have been established in the country to date."
With the addition of the Pullman brand to its India network, Accor now has the most extensive brand portfolio of hotels operating in the country, providing the Group with a strategic advantage in this dynamic market. Delhi airport implements
User Development Fee (UDF)
Delhi airport implements steep hike of 350% in airport charges, worries domestic and international passengers…
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) at Delhi has become one of the costliest airports in the world with the implementation of the User Development Fee (UDF). The UDF was brought into effect yesterday (15 May) with a steep hike
of 350% in airport charges. For the first time, the UDF will also be levied on the arriving passengers. The UDF will be charged based on the distance travelled, for which slabs have been created. The International Airport Transport Association (IATA), the airlines and the tour operators have cautioned that the new tariff hike will drastically affect the day to day operations of domestic as well as international airlines. The UDF was approved by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) and will be valid for a period of two years.

International Status Likely For Lucknow, Varanasi Airports
Lucknow: The Lucknow and Varanasi airports could soon attain an international status. The announcement to this effect was made by Civil Aviation Minister, Mr. Ajit Singh, who inaugurated the new terminal building at Lucknow airport.
The two airports, which though have international flights operating from them, essentially to West Asia and Nepal, have an integrated status. That is both domestic and international flights operate from the same terminal building. Singh's announcement comes close on the heels of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) planning to renovate the old terminal building, which sources said may eventually be used for international flight operations. However, it is the question of international flights getting attracted to Lucknow and Varanasi airport that continues to pose a big challenge. Aviation experts point out that it is not until adequate development of the state takes place that international flights, operating beyond Nepal or West Asia, would knock the doors of Lucknow or Varanasi.
Tour operators insist that the two airports could become a gateway or exit point to Buddhist circuit, in what could attract operators from South East and South Asia. There have been indications from operators showing interest in operating flights from Lucknow to Bangkok and Colombo. However, that is still in the initial stages.
