Rush-hour flying to cost you more
Air travel during peak hours is likely to turn costly with the government planning to double airport charges during the busy hours of the morning and evening. At the same time, flights taking off between 12 midnight and 5 am are likely to turn cheaper. The civil aviation ministry is considering a proposal envisaging differential tariffs to ease congestion at busy airports like Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore where flights are delayed by half-an-hour to one hour due to choking traffic rush. In any case, most airlines already collect a congestion surcharge of Rs. 150 which is applicable to all airports of the country, irrespective of actual congestion. The charges are not passed on to airports but serves only to beef up bottom-line of airlines. The new system is aimed at encouraging airlines to launch flights during non-peak hours.
