Festival Alert |

Raksha Bandhan - 9th August
The annual "festival" of Raksha Bandhan, which is meant to commemorate
the abiding ties between a brother and sister, is marked by a very
simple ceremony in which a sister ties a rakhi - which may be a
colorful thread, a simple bracelet, or a decorative string - around the
wrist of her brother. The word "raksha" signifies protection, and
"bandhan" is an association signifying an enduring sort of bond; and
so, when a sister ties a rakhi around the waist of her brother, she
signifies her loving attachment to him. He, likewise, recognizes the
special bonds between them, and by extending his wrist forward, he in
fact extends the hand of his protection over her. Legend goes that Rani
Karnavati of Chittor sent a rakhi to the Mughal Emperor Humayun when
she was threatened by Bahadur Shah of Mewar. Humayun abandoned an
ongoing military campaign to ride to her rescue.
Independence Day -
15th August
Independence Day, August 15, commemorates the day in 1947 when India
achieved freedom from British rule. It is celebrated with flag hoisting
ceremonies and cultural programs in the state capitals. The Prime
Minister's speech at the Red Fort in Delhi is the major highlight. All
Government Organisations have a holiday as 15th August is a National
holiday. In the capital New Delhi most of the Government Offices are
lit up.

Gai Jatra Festival
In this festival teen-aged boys dressed up in the attire of a cow
parade in the streets of the town. This custom spring from the belief
that cows help the members of the family, who have died within that
year, to travel to heaven smoothly. Groups of mimics improvise short
satirical enactments on the current sociopolitical scenes of the town
to the entertainment of the public. The week beginning from Janai
Poornima actually unfolds a season of good many religious and cultural
activities. All the Buddhist monasteries open their gates to the
visitors to view their bronze sculptures and collection of painting for
a week. The
festivity of Gaijatra itself lasts for a week enlivened by the
performance of dance and drama in the different localities of the town.
Sri
Lanka
Tourist arrivals increase by 21% in

There were 107,224 tourist arrivals from Western Europe during the
first five months which is an increase of 31.1 per cent over the
previous year. UK brought in the highest number of arrivals (38,420)
while Germany (23,803) and France (12,633) were the other main
contributors.
2006 Kandy Perahera - 31st July to
10th August 2006
Esala (July/August) is the seasons of festivals in Sri Lanka and the
full moon day of Esala is the climax of some of the festivals. The most
magnificent of these festivals is the Kandy Esala Perahera when the
streets of Kandy erupt in a ten-day-long pageant. Young men mortify
their flesh by walking "in harness" with spikes in their backs,
accompanied by a fabulous procession, which includes fire-juggling
acrobats, sumptuously-decorated elephants, traditional dancers, whip
crackers, torch bearers and thousands of barefoot pilgrims and
swordsmen. The action is made even more mesmerising because it happens
at night.

Hotel Vil Uyana to commence operations
from September
Vil Uyana, situated within view of Sigiriya rock, on the flatlands that
stretch to the west, integrates into an ancient plan - a plan to
irrigate, in the tradition of the Sinhala kings. The introduction of a
wetland on reclaimed agricultural lands within the Dry Zone, provides
the unique backdrop for this exciting new property. The hotel is
possibly the first in the world to construct a wetland system with
lakes and reed beds to form a private nature reserve. This has allowed
for the first time in Sri Lanka for rooms to be built over water. Rooms
have been placed within the paddy fields, thereby giving the guest a
unique opportunity of participating in both the farming and harvesting
if they wished. Vil Uyana is spread over 24 acres and has 25 Chalets
set in 3 distinct ‘habitats’ : 7 Water Pavilions, 6 Paddy Field Villas,
2 Marsh Villas and 10 Forest Lodges. |
