Visa guidelines for India

Thinking about visiting India? Here’s a simple breakdown on how to get your tourist visa.

  1. Check if You’re Eligible

A tourist visa is perfect for those visiting India for recreation, sightseeing, meeting friends or family, short-term yoga programs (up to 6 months), or brief medical treatments. If you’re aiming for something other than tourism, you’ll need a different type of visa.

  2. Understand Your Visa Validity
    • For Nationals of the USA, Canada, and Japan: You can get a multiple-entry visa valid for 10 years. Just remember, each visit can’t exceed 180 days.
    • For Most Other Countries: You’ll typically get a multiple-entry visa valid for 5 years, with each visit not exceeding 90 days (or 180 days if you’re from the UK).
    • Special Cases: If you’re from countries like Iran, Egypt, or Libya, your visa might be valid for up to 5 years, but you can’t stay more than 90 days per visit.
    • For Bangladesh and China: Check specific agreements and policies for the most accurate info.
    • For Pakistan Nationals: Tourist visas aren’t available. If you’re of Pakistan origin, you’ll receive a 3-month single-entry visa.
  3. Know the Conditions
    • No Extensions: Tourist visas can’t be extended or changed to another type of visa, except in certain situations.
    • Gap Between Visits: If you’re from Afghanistan, China, Iraq, Sudan, or Pakistan origin, there must be a 2-month gap between visits. If an urgent visit is needed, you’ll need to provide an undertaking explaining the situation.
  4. Group Tourist Visas

Groups of 4 or more, traveling with a recognized travel agency, can apply for a Group Tourist Visa. The travel agency needs to complete the online application for you.

  5. Apply Online
    • Fill Out the Form: Head to Indian Visa Online to complete your application. Remember, each person needs to fill out their own form. Double-check everything before you hit submit—no changes are allowed once it’s sent.
    • Upload Your Photo: Make sure your JPEG photo fits these guidelines:
      • Size: 10 KB to 300 KB
      • Clear, full-face, front view with eyes open
      • Plain, light-colored or white background
      • Head measurement should be between 25mm and 35mm, with eyes between 28mm and 35mm from the bottom of your chin.
  6. Schedule Your Appointment

Schedule an appointment with the Indian Mission where you’re applying. Each applicant needs their own appointment.

  7. Gather Your Documents

A passport valid for at least 6 months, a completed application form, and a recent photo that meets the requirements. Be sure to check if you need any additional documents based on your visa type.
