Thinking about visiting India? Here’s a simple breakdown on how to get your tourist visa.

Check if You’re Eligible:

A tourist visa is perfect for those visiting India for recreation, sightseeing, meeting friends or family, short-term yoga programs (up to 6 months), or brief medical treatments. If you’re aiming for something other than tourism, you’ll need a different type of visa.

Types of Visa:

  • Tourist e-Visa: Valid for 30 days (double entry), 1 year, or 5 years (multiple entries). Stay cannot exceed 90 days per visit (for most nationalities).
  • Business e-Visa: 1-year validity with multiple entries; stay up to 180 days.
  • Medical e-Visa: 60 days with triple entry for treatment.
  • Conference e-Visa: 30-day validity, single entry.

Eligibility:

  • Citizens of over 170 countries are eligible.
  • Passport must have a minimum validity of 6 months.
  • Applications should be made between 4 to 120 days before travel.

Application:

  • Complete the form on the Indian Visa Online website.
  • Each applicant must submit their own form. No changes can be made once the form is submitted.

Photo Requirements:

  • Size: 10 KB to 300 KB.
  • Format: JPEG.
  • Background: Plain, light-colored, or white.
  • Face View: Full face, front view with eyes open.
  • Head Measurement: Head should measure between 25 mm and 35 mm, and eyes should be 28 mm to 35 mm from the bottom of the chin.
  • The image must be clear, free from shadows, reflections from glasses, or obstructions.

Application Requirements:

  • Tourist/Business: Passport photo and copy of the passport bio page.
  • Medical: Medical documents from the hospital in India.
  • Business: Business card or invitation letter from the Indian company.
  • Conference: Invitation from the organizing institution and political clearance if applicable.

Fees: Fees vary based on nationality and visa type. Payments are made online and are non-refundable.

Processing Time: Applications are processed within 3-5 business days. It’s advisable to apply early.

Conditions:

  • Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible.
  • A maximum of two e-Visas can be issued per calendar year.

Restrictions:

  • The e-Visa does not allow travel to restricted or protected areas without special permission.
  • Frequent travelers must not exceed the annual visa quota.
