July 2016  unique ways to showcase Indian Subcontinent

Discover, Dream, Experience

Welcome to another hand-picked collection of India’s myriad destinations, activities and experiences, showcasing the true diversity of this incredible country. This edition takes you crashing through the desert on an adventure jeep safari, to Lucknow a city revitalised, a Royal Stay in a palace at the top of the world and the vibrant festival that is Diwali!

Experience: Overlander Jeep Safaris
This off-roading experience takes you on an adventure of a lifetime, across the Thar Desert surrounding Jodhpur. You will witness a different side of India, one that is rarely seen – the rural, pure, simple village life, the wildlife and the birdlife of this region.

The experience is not about the destination, but the journey, in which you traverse the countryside on dirt tracks, camel tracks, through dry river beds and even make your own tracks if necessary. You will visit villages and schools, be welcomed into local houses and see a way of life that is harsh but where the people are happy. It is amazing to see how they have adapted to life in the desert. You will drive past herds of Blue Bull, the largest member of the deer family, and black buck as well as camel; you will see food being cooked on open fireplaces, children playing and women chattering at the village well. What will be consistent, are the smiling faces of the people you will encounter throughout the day.

Visit: Lucknow
Lucknow was once renowned for its grand Nawabs who loved the arts and culture and also developed a unique and delicious cuisine; a legacy which remains today whether dining on the street food or in one of the five star hotels.

For the British, Lucknow is more commonly associated with the starting point of the Indian Uprising of 1857. Today it is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh, and although the era of the Nawabs is past, many of their fine monuments still remain including Bara Imambara, one of the finest buildings in India, and Chota Imambara whose unusual design and decor should not be missed. The Residency, scene of the uprising where 2,000 British residents and Indian loyal to the Raj died with its ruined, charred walls is well maintained and wonderfully atmospheric. The bazaars in Lucknow are particularly good and provide a snapshot of day-to-day life for the city's residents. Also not to be missed is the street food tour. This truly is a city of culture, crafts and cuisine!

Festival: Diwali
Festivals in India are colourful, vibrant and full of joy and none more so than Diwali, also known as the "Festival of light.’’ It is an ancient Hindu festival which signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. It also marks the start of winter. The festival is celebrated over five days and in the cities, houses are lit with myriad fairy lights and lamps. It is stunning. The festival is also celebrated using an abundance of fire crackers which can prove incredibly noisy, and so off the beaten track destinations are often better to visit during this time where the celebrations are slightly calmer and quieter.

Stay at: Stock Palace, Leh
Built entirely by Ladakhi craftsmen in 1820, the imposing Stok Palace is still the home of Namgyal dynasty which traces its origin to the founder – Lhachen Palgygon in the 10th century. The Palace was opened to the public with blessings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and has since welcomed visitors from all over the world. A stay here encapsulates and reflects the lifestyle and history of the people in this harsh and remote, yet extraordinarily beautiful destination. Hosted by the Royal Family, you experience a unique insight into the region and enjoy meals prepared from the family kitchen, a healthy and natural combination of Ladakhi, Tibetan and Indian food. This is a unique experience in an extraordinary destination.
