Welcome to another edition of "Creatively Yours"
the newsletter from Creative Travel India
|
|
Dear Industry Colleagues:
Here is another edition of the award winning "Creatively Yours".
Time flies. Its already September with another few weeks to go
before we formally go into our high season. The Commonwealth Games
will be starting with great fanfare on the 3rd of October. The city
is looking very different with a lot of new roads, new flyovers, an
enhanced metro system and new stadium and venues that make us proud.
There has been some negative press about the preparedness of the
country for these games, but the mass press tends to specialize in
bad news and has totally over-looked all the great things that have
come about from the games. See some of the images below.
The office is buzzing again. Requests are flowing in from all over
the world and the mood in the Indian travel industry is buoyant. Of
course, some countries are picking up slower than others, but
overall things look a lot better than they did 6 months ago.
Our product development team is busy creating different tours for
all our partners all over the world. If you would like to see how
can we add some magic to what you do, let us know. We after all take
pride in our ability to make a trip to the Indian sub-continent
something very different.

Dussehra
October 17, 2010
Dussehra is the biggest festivals in India after Diwali – in fact,
this festival has a longer duration than the festival of lights
“Diwali” and both are related. In North India it is believed that on
Dusshera day Lord Rama defeated the Demon King Ravana, Diwali is
celebrated 20 days later to commemorate & celebrate his victorious
return to his capital Ayodhya. This 10 days festival is
spectacularly celebrated differently in various parts of the country
according to the respective mythological beliefs; in all folk
traditions & beliefs this festivals marks victory of good over evil.

Deepavali or Diwali
November 5, 2010
Deepavali or Diwali is also popularly known as the Festival of
Lights and is an official holiday in India. The word Deepavali
literally translates as a row of lamps in Sanskrit and marks a
victory over evil. In most parts of the country, it is a homecoming
celebration to greet victorious Lord Rama’s return from Lanka, in
Bengal Goddess Kali is worshiped as the vanquisher of demon
Mahishasur. A universal association with Laxmi the goddess of wealth
and prosperity is almost everywhere. The day is spent in
anticipation of the evening Puja or prayer rituals after which small
clay lamps (or Deep in Sanskrit) are filled with clarified butter
oil are lighted and the entire house is lit up by these lamps, the
modern generation also uses fairy lights & other electric devices to
light up the night. Everyone wears new clothes and visit family and
friends. Later everyone assembles with friends and neighbors to
burst crackers. Many business men close their ledgers and start
fresh ones on Diwali, gambling is also considered auspicious though
only among family & friends. Newly wed couples get extra attention
as the new lady in the house is considered to be a spiritual
representation of the goddess Laxmi. Though celebrated all over
India, Udaipur has the most spectacular views of the celebrations
reflected on the lake, followed closely by Jaipur and Delhi. |

Dear Rohit,
I had not had time to answer you sooner coming back from my
trip. I want to thank you for the excellent service I received from
your company.
Peter was right when he told me that yours was one of the
best agencies I could deal with in India. The itinerary was the one
I was looking for, I felt safe with my family and the personnel was
very courteous. Hotels and mobilization were first class and the
guides were knowledgeable and well behaved.
Mr. Narayan Singh and
his team are great assets for your company.
I will not hesitate in recommending your services to anyone going to
India. I think a friend of mine should be contacting you if he has
not done so already.

The Leela Palace Kempinski Udaipur
by Rajeev Kohli, Joint Managing Director, Creative Travel India
Earlier
this month I travelled to Udaipur for a conference. A small town in
the North Indian state of Rajasthan, Udaipur is best known for the
famed Lake Palace, a hotel in the middle of a lake.
Udaipur – “The Venice of the East”, is an enchanting city. From
lakes in the midst of sandy terrain to green forested hills where
wildlife still abounds, the surprises are endless. And, in the
lakes, or by their edges, are Palaces straight out of fairy tales,
each of them more beautiful than the other. Udaipur is a cool oasis
in the dry heart of Rajasthan. It is probably the most romantic city
in a state where every city has some romantic or exotic tale to
tell. The huge City Palace, towering over the Lake Pichola is the
largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Though it is a conglomeration
of buildings built by successive rulers, it manages to retain a
surprising uniformity of design and affords fine views of the lake
and the city from upper terraces.
But this issue of personally experienced is not about the city, but
is about the hotel I stayed in. On the banks of the Lake Pichola
lies the new Leela Palace Kempinski from Leela hotels (www.theleela.com).
The Leela group is one of India’s emerging hotel chains with
properties that top the charts wherever they are. I had long been
resisting the calls to come and experience the property, a matter of
not having the time rather than anything else. But as Udaipur was my
destination for the conference, I could put this off no longer.
And boy, do I have no regrets. In the Leela Palace Udaipur I saw a
hotel that is probably the most flawless I have seen in India. Capt
C.P.K. Nair is a dear friend of the Kohli family and someone we hold
in high esteem, but I sincerely write this review ignoring the
personal side of our relationship with the Leela and write with true
respect for the standards in hospitality they are establishing.
The transfer to the Leela Udaipur is by boat. There is a small
approach road to the hotel itself, but unfortunately has far too
much traffic to be practical. So boat is the only way to go and
fortunately the lake is full enough to last for at least 2 years, by
when the city hopes the permanent solution through an under
construction canal project will make it perennial. Taking boats in
and out do make the experience a lot more relaxing. From an elegant
jetty along the lake shore, a 10 minute transfer by private hotel
boats will take you to the hotel jetty, a lovely domed structure,
with a walkway upto the lobby of the hotel. The welcome was
impeccable, as expected of any leading Indian hospitality player.
The lobby is meant to be the welcome point before you are led to
your room where in-room check-in will be the norm.
The hotel has 72 rooms and 8 suites, overlooking the lake and the
Aravali hills. The hotel has two wings, the Lake Wing and the Palace
View wing, with the rooms in the Palace Wing being larger. As I was
escorted to my room, I paid close attention to the craftsmanship and
detailing that went in to every inch of the hotel. The mirror work
on the walls, the wood panelling, the intricate courtyard, and the
magnificent steel grand staircase - each element finished to
perfection. I got to my room to see an amazing view of the lake and
the City Palace complex behind it. With a small balcony to sit out
upon, the sheer serenity was worth the visit.
The rooms in both wings are fairly large, with bathrooms being
interestingly laid out to give private space to the users. With
large walk-in closets, luggage is never in your face, making your
room uncluttered. The beds are centred in the room rather than
pushed up against the wall, enhancing the perception of space.
Furnishings are elegant, with attention to detail given to colour-coordination
and finishing.
An elegant restaurant and a cosy warm lounge bar add to the guest
experience at the hotel. Every evening there are local instrumental
musicians playing in the central courtyard, filling the public areas
with their sounds. I of course could not miss an opportunity to use
a spa and must say the Leela’s spa run by ESPA is by far one of the
most gorgeous I have ever seen. The way stone and water have been
combined to create an oasis with tented treatment rooms, creates a
true dream zone. It was perhaps the best Spa experience I have had
in a long time.
As I stood in my room, I pondered for a few minutes on the
differences between the Leela and its other two bigger brothers in
the city, the Taj Lake Palace and the Oberoi Udaivilas. The Leela
Udaipur, for all it is, will always be compared to the more
established brands in the city and will always be compared for size
of the property with the larger Oberoi. Can I say one is better than
the other, well just let me leave it at that some people like
strawberry jam while some like orange. All the three properties in
Udaipur are distinct, different and unique and all three have
changed the way the destination is perceived and will be sold
forever. They have put Udaipur on the global luxury map by enhancing
the destinations experience and bringing mind-blowing levels of
hospitality to this sleepy little town.
On a closing note, I will add a personal comment – what I saw in the
Leela Udaipur was a hotel that has set a new benchmark in how I will
look at hotels from this point on. India has a long history of fine
hospitality – from the Taj to the Oberoi to the Leela, each one
establishing themselves in a space in the Indian tourism industry.
Each one has done us proud and has made doing business for us at
Creative a charm. Our growth over the years has been assisted by
having their wonderful hotels to offer our guests.
Ask us for options in India using the Leela Palace Udaipur.... |

New Delhi's Khan Market India’s
costliest street, World’s 21st
Khan Market - the country’s
most-expensive retail destination - has moved up three notches to 21 in the list of the world’s most expensive shopping streets in an
annual global survey by real estate consultants Cushman & Wakefield.
The survey provides a global barometer of the retail sector,
tracking rents in the world’s top 269 shopping locations across 59
countries. New York’s Fifth Avenue retained its title as the world’s
most expensive shopping destination in the survey, Main Streets
Across the World 2010, followed by Hong Kong’s Causeway. Ginza in
Tokyo, Japan came in third position overtaking London, Paris and
Milan. The biggest erosion of rental values across India was noted
in NCR with Basant Lok recording an annual decline of over 38%.
Other retail high street destinations in New Delhi did not see the
same fervour and locations such as Greater Kailash-I (-10%) and
South Extension (-12% ) continued to see a downward slide. Khan
Market saw a rise of over 15 per cent in its rental values over
2009-10. “As before, key cities such as New Delhi and Mumbai will be
seeing a faster rate of growth in values against others due to
greater interest in these markets,” said Kaustuv Roy, Executive
Director Cushman & Wakefield India. |
