Deepavali or
Diwali
November 3,
2013
Deepavali or
Diwali is also
popularly known
as the Festival
of Lights and is
an official
holiday in
India. The word
Deepavali
literally
translates as a
row of lamps in
Sanskrit and
marks a victory
over evil. In
most parts of
the country, it
is a homecoming
celebration to
greet victorious
Lord Rama's
return from
Lanka, in Bengal
Goddess Kali is
worshiped as the
vanquisher of
demon
Mahishasur. A
universal
association with
Laxmi the
goddess of
wealth and
prosperity is
almost
everywhere.
The day is spent
in anticipation
of the evening
Puja or prayer
rituals after
which small clay
lamps (or Deep
in Sanskrit) are
filled with
clarified butter
oil are lighted
and the entire
house is lit up
by these lamps,
the modern
generation also
uses fairy
lights & other
electric devices
to light up the
night. Everyone
wears new
clothes and
visit family and
friends. Later
everyone
assembles with
friends and
neighbors to
burst crackers.
Many business
men close their
ledgers and
start fresh ones
on Diwali,
gambling is also
considered
auspicious
though only
among family &
friends. Newly
wed couples get
extra attention
as the new lady
in the house is
considered to be
a spiritual
representation
of the goddess
Laxmi. Though
celebrated all
over India,
Udaipur has the
most spectacular
views of the
celebrations
reflected on the
lake, followed
closely by
Jaipur and
Delhi. |

Navratri-Nine days of prayers, rituals and celebrations
Devoted to Goddess Shakti, the Navratri festival in Rajasthan is celebrated with gaiety and fervor. The main highlight of the festivity of nine nights is the folk dance of Gujarat called Garba. It is said that each day Goddess Durga manifests herself in different forms. Each day of the fiesta begins with performance of Aarti. People from across the country would come to Rajasthan to celebrate the festival and get energized by the thought of celebrating the Navratri festival for nine days starting from October 05 to 13, 2013.
People dressed up in beautiful traditional attire perform the Garba folk dance around the statue of Goddess Shakt till late midnight. The dancers usually make use of dandiya, i.e. long wooden sticks, to play garba. During the nine day long festivity, clubs and gathering places are enthused with decoration, colorful lights, tempting food stalls and interesting games.
One can see passion, devotion and enthusiasm of the people with which they indulge in the festive activities of the Navratri season. Devotees from different regions celebrate the festival in different ways, according to their rituals but the thoughts and devotion behind the celebration of Navratri are the same. |
