Welcome to another edition of "Creatively Yours", the newsletter from Creative Travel India

Dear Industry Colleagues :

Another month of summer. Parts of India are facing scorching heat with 44 degrees Celsius for Delhi, quite normal. The good news is that we had a tremendous downpour today and so things will be a lot cooler. I guess its hard to explain how one can welcome torrential rain, but in India anything that cools the summer temperatures is welcome.

This newsletter adds something new to our communication. We are starting a new section called "Personally Experienced" where we will describe our own real life experiences with a hotel or attraction. We at Creative take client comfort very seriously and try to visit as many hotels as possible. Now and then we also get the luxury of experiencing first hand some of the best hotels in the world and our thoughts shall be shared with you.

The US Dollar continues to plummet. We had given details of this in our last month's newsletter. This is going to affect all pricing of tours !!

We at Creative Travel and our specialist brands - "Signature Tours" , the luxury travel specialist and "Plan it!", the finest conference management team in India are proud to offer the best of India and her neighboring countries to the discerning traveler. "The Leela Kempinski Kovalam Beach Kerala"

Visited in June 2007
by Rajeev Kohli, Director of Marketing, Creative Travel

The objective of this section is to share some first hand experiences of Team Creative members of  any hotel, resturants or attraction. Brochures and web sites only tell so much and we hope our first-hand experiences will add some value to your product planning process.

I took some time off this year with my family to take a long overdue break. On my way to the Maldives (where is stayed at the fabulous One & Only Kanuhara, a report on that will be in a future issue) we stopped for 2 nights at the Leela Kempinski Kovalam Beach. This hotel used to be a government property and was privatized and ultimately acquired by the Leela Group of hotels. This chain is known for running some of the finest hotels in the world and has created a niche for itself as being a luxury chain.

Kovalam is situated in the South of Kerala, a state known for its natural beauty. The nearest airport is Trivandrum and is commonly added to a South India tour. Kovalam is one of the most famous beaches in India and this property has a commanding location with one block of rooms facing the beach and another facing the sea (which is my preferred location for its direct uninterrupted view) of the water).  With 182 rooms and suites, the hotels is large enough to cater to groups yet small enough to give just the right levels of personalized service.

We stayed in the Club block which has 56 rooms. Unlike most hotels where club floors or rooms are just spruced up rooms with extra amenities, the Leela Club concept is of a hotel within a hotel. At this hotel the club block has it own check-in in, own fine dining restaurant, a separate spa, library lounge room and the best views of the water. The rooms are new and well appointed. Each has flat panel TVs, mini bars, internet connections etc etc, all the expectations of a deluxe hotel. The bathrooms were nice with a large shower cubicle with a two headed shower and a separate cubicle for the toilet. What is nice about the Leela at all their hotels is that you get some great chocolates or cookies placed in the room every day, all made fresh in-house. A nice personal touch. The club block also has its own infinity pool that is just heavenly. On the pools side is a indoor outdoor restaurant for club residents only.

The main building has the rest of the rooms. Also has its own pool and large lobby area. There is a large multi-cusine restaurant and a bar and on the beach side there is a outdoor sea food specialty restaurant. One memory I left the hotel with is having had the best chili crab I have ever had in my life. Food is a strong point at all Leela hotels.

The hotels also has a world class Ayurveda center where one can enjoy rejuvenation treatments during their stay. This is a must for any first time visitor to Kerala. The club block has a western style spa.

The hotel is also very child friendly which is a nice change from stuffy luxury hotels.

My personal experience of staying at the Leela Kovalam was very positive and I would recommend it without any hesitation. I checked our rate contacts when I returned and I was surprised at the great pricing they have (we are a preferred partner of course) and what great value it is. For any clients going to Kerala, this makes a great ending to a India tour. Trivandrum which is the nearest airport has some international connectivity and is well connected to Mumbai (Bombay) if other international airlines are used.

I would give the Leela Kovalam two thumbs up.  Below are a few images taken by me. There are more if any one would like them. I personally prefer real pictures over professionally taken shots.

To read more about the Leela Kovalam go to - http://www.theleela.com/hotel-kovalam.html and you can obviously contact us for some great prices for your clients.

Rickshaws pull out, buses move in
There has been a new rule introduced in Delhi's Old Delhi area where the symbolic cycle rickshaws have been banned from the main Chandini Chowk area. This was the area where we had our clients do a cycle rickshaw ride through the hustling bustling streets of Old Delhi. We are investigating alternate route options, but at this time the rickshaw rides will be discontinued. Residents and even shopkeepers - initially unhappy with the idea - are now satisfied with the government's latest act of decongesting Chandni Chowk. Click here to read more...

Tibet

Travel to Tibet to get tougher for foreigners
China has tightened restrictions on travel by foreigners in the restive Himalayan region of Tibet after five American activists unfurled a banner at the foot of Mount Everest to protest against the staging of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The new rules came into effect after the week-long May Day holiday, according to an official with the state-run China Travel Service in Lhasa, the Tibetan capital. The restrictions will also stop foreigners applying for a permit to enter the region from the office of the Tibetan travel bureau in the southwestern city of Chengdu, from where there are direct flights to Lhasa. All travel must now be approved by the head office in Lhasa, which operates under police supervision. Tibetan authorities had hoped that the new train service would boost tourism. But the new rules could cool the enthusiasm of foreign tourists if they are limited to visiting Lhasa and are then forced to complete complex procedures in order to leave the city, even as part of a tour group.
