Now, village-style tourism in UP
In a brand new initiative to attract
more tourists to Uttar Pradesh, the state government is planning to
set up two resorts based on rural themes similar to Jaipur's famous
Chokhi Dhani. The resorts, are to come up enroute to Taj Mahal via
Yamuna Expressway, and are expected to be a unique mix of tradition
and five-star facilities along the 165-km-long expressway.
Government officials said the government will borrow from Chokhi
Dhani, which attracts a large number of foreign as well as domestic
tourists. The resorts, once they come up, will depict the culture
and village life of UP.
According to the state tourism department, the Chokhi Dhani
management has shown interest in developing concept-villages in UP
along national highways and near tourist places. The government said
these models will be developed on a public-private-partnership
model, with the management of Chokhi Dhani or any other interested
groups who are willing to promote UP's tourism.
At present, the government has proposed the setting up two such
village-styled resorts near Noida and another between Agra and
Mathura, to cater to the visitors of Taj Mahal and temples of
Mathura. |

MHA urged by IATO to clarify Group
Landing permits for travel agents
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had
announced the revised procedure for foreign tourists in groups of
four or more arriving by air or sea and sponsored by Indian travel
agencies approved by the Ministry of Tourism and with a pre-drawn
itinerary in April 2013. Now, IATO has sought clarifications from
the Ministry of Home Affairs on Group Landing permits, so that all
inbound players can make use of this facility. Some of the issues
for which clarifications had been sought include how and where to
apply and papers/documents required for submission by the recognised
tour-operator, and what will be the format of undertaking to be
given by tour operators to ensure nothing is left out. Some of the
other issues that were raised are where and when fees is to be paid,
along with various options, and also if Group Landing Permit is
refused, what will happen to the air-ticket and tour cost which has
been paid by the tourist. |

Indian carriers' fare unbundling may
not result in lower prices
INDIA'S Ministry of Civil Aviation has
given the green light for Indian carriers to unbundle certain
services and charge separate fees for each of them, including
check-in baggage, seat preference, selection of meals and beverages,
and carriage of sports equipment.
The government rolled out the new
guidelines on the assumption that the basic fares will be kept low
for price-conscious clientele, while enabling airlines to develop
more sustainable operations in an increasingly competitive aviation
environment.
To ensure transparency of charges,
the ministry's acquiescence also comes with a corollary that
carriers will have to fix and announce their charges in advance.

Airlines can charge for preferred
seats, check-in bags
In a move that would raise the cost of
air travel, the government said it has allowed airlines to charge
passengers for preferred seats on a flight, check-in baggage and
meals, among other things.
"Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh has decided to permit scheduled
airlines to unbundle certain services and to charge fees for these
services separately," an official release said.
The services for which the airlines
would be free to charge passengers include preferential seating,
meals, snacks, drinks (barring drinking water), check-in baggage,
use of airline lounges, carriage of sports equipment and musical
instruments and valuable baggage which have higher carrier
liability.
"The objective of the decision is to
facilitate airlines to offer low base fare for price sensitive
travellers, while at the same time offer choice to service seekers
at a price," it said.

Air India to reduce domestic free
baggage allowance from 20 to 15 kgs
Air India would lower the free baggage
allowance from 20 to 15 kgs on the domestic sector and start
charging a flat rate of about Rs 200-250 per kilo on excess baggage
from next week, airline sources said yesterday, the PTI reported.
This follows a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular
last week allowing the airlines to charge fees for 'unbundled
services' like check-in baggage, preferential seats, meals, snacks
or drink (barring drinking water) and sports and musical instruments
on their domestic flights.
Passengers travelling on Air India flights would from next week be
allowed to carry only 15 kgs of free check-in baggage and pay a flat
rate of about Rs 200-250 per kg on excess weight, the sources said.
Currently, the excess baggage charges vary between Rs 150-400 per kg
depending upon the sector.
There would be no charge for hand baggage up to seven kgs, they
said, adding that registered frequent flyers would be allowed to
carry up to 20 kgs of checked in baggage as is prevalent now. |

This means the earlier incentive components will continue. After
the Ministrys pending decision on transaction fees, SpiceJet would
come up with a comprehensive incentive which will be mutually
beneficial, it added.
SpiceJet had withdrawn the commission. This led to protests from
travel agents who feared that other airlines too will follow suit. |

Kerala's seaplane service takes off
THE first seaplane service in Kerala
is off to a flying start, with four more seaplane operators expected
to launch such services by 4Q2013, connecting state cities to its
extensive network of backwaters. Kerala tourism minister, A P Anil
Kumar, said: Seaplane services will allow tourists to travel from
Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Mangalore to several points
in the backwaters like Alleppey, Kollam, Allapuzha, Kasargode and
Ernakulam. Water dromes with floating jetties (for seaplane
landings), have been built.Tourists can now travel between
destinations and access the destinations and hotels located along
Kerala's backwaters without relying on the state's roads, which are
patchy in places. Air Travel Enterprises chairman, EM Najeeb, said
the new means of transport would up the quotient for higher-end
tourist inflow and allow quicker and more scenic transfers, and
enhance Kerala's image as a special place to visit.
Kerala Seaplane Services is one of
four seaplane operators slated to begin service later this year. It
plans to commence business on August 1, after the monsoon season,
and offers three 10-seater and one four-seater planes for transport
and charter rentals.
It also intends to sell packages
for transfers, including a City Joyride package traversing Kochi-Trivandrum-Calicut-Alleppey,
a 20-minute ride at Rs3,000 (US$53) per pax. |
