Welcome
to another edition of "Creatively Yours"
the newsletter from Creative Travel India |
|
Dear Industry Colleagues:
Here is another edition of the award winning "Creatively
Yours".
Its already the end of January ! Time really does fly fast.
There are just three months left of this high season for us in
India. Business has picked up for sure and hotels are showing
very healthy occupancy levels. Much of that is fueled by
intense domestic demand. With a growth rate of over 6%, India
has truly shown itself to be recession proof. International
inbound travel has also shown positive flow, but is below the
level we have been used to in the past. I can now only hope
for our hotel fraternity to be a bit smarter on what we will
do for the summer season so that we can take advantage of some
short term gains.
There has been a significant change in the Indian visa rules.
If you have not received our update from January 5th, you can
see it below.
You shall see some new and exciting initiatives this year from
Team Creative. New experiential inclusions, new circuits, new
concepts... we take pride in our ability to make a trip to the
Indian sub-continent something very different.

Creative Travel's Annual Chaat Party
Every year, on the second Saturday of January, we have our famous "Chaat
Party". This is when we call our friends from the hotels and airlines just
to say thank you over an afternoon of mouth watering feast. It is also an
opportunity for our team to meet the people they speak to on the phones
throughout the year. After all, its good to put a face behind a name. This
year we had over 500 guests. It seems the popularity of the party keeps on
growing every year.
For those unfamiliar with the Indian passion that is "Chaat", here is a
link to read up on it -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaat
If you were at the party this year, you can see the pictures at -

Maha
Kumbh Mela – 2010, Haridwar
Be a part of the world’s largest spiritual gathering
Haridwar
or the doorway to God is one of the oldest city in the world. It is one of
the seven holiest places according to Hindu mythology, due to its
geographical reasons the city is the strating point for the three
important pilgrimage cities of Rishikesh, Badrinath and Kedarnath. Legend
goes that the suryavnshi Prince Bhagirath performed penance here to
salvage the souls of his ancestors who had perished due to the curse of
the sage Kapila. The penance was answered with the river Ganga descending
from the heavens to revive the sixty thousand sons of King Sagara.
Haridwar is also one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela, occurring once
every 12 years and the Ardha Kumbha Mela occurring every 06 years.

Slowly on the Ganges: An Eight Hundred Mile
Voyage across India
Tourists will now be able to revisit the country’s colonial past from
Kolkata to Varanasi through the 800 mile cruise on the river Ganges with
West Bengal Tourism launching the service. This is the first cruise on the
Ganges after almost 200 years. Very few journeys can be as interesting as
a journey into the colonial past. The eight hundred mile expedition is of
fifteen days duration and only ten sailings are planned for the coming
season. The expedition takes in a number of the most important historical
sites in India including the colonial splendours of Calcutta, the sacred
places of Buddhism around Bodh Gaya and Varanasi. In addition, the cruise
stops daily in smaller towns and villages to see handicrafts, rural life
and a variety of local cultures as the cruise passes from region to
region. |

WBTDC plans to
start ‘son-et-lumiere’ at five heritage buildings to boost Night Tourism
West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC) is gearing up to
take a project to repair the existing son-et-lumiere at Victoria Memorial
and replace it with a ‘dynamic light-and-sound show’. The new age
eco-friendly system will have low power consumption, generate less heat,
save energy and have a longer shelf life. Illuminations of four heritage
buildings are also on the anvil namely Nakhoda Mosque, Town Hall, St
Paul's Cathedral and Dakshineswar Temple. WBTDC is also planning to start
another son-et-lumiere show at the Park Street Cemetery, as it plans to
organise a light-and-sound show with a narrative on the city's history,
the cemetery and personalities buried there. |

Sri Lanka polls: Rajapaksa wins
Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday won a landslide mandate for six more years
as Sri Lanka's president from voters in seven of the country's nine
provinces, largely made up of majority Sinhalese, but Tamils and Muslims
joined hands in the north and east to support his rival, former army chief
Sarath Fonseka. |

Galle Literary Festival - 28th January -
1st February 2010
The world heritage city of Galle will once again be in the spotlight when
the Galle Literary Festival 2010 takes off on 28th January. In its 4th
consecutive year the festival will run for five days and conclude on
Monday 1st February 2010. Galle, has had many a distinguished visitor
describe its varied charms and one admirer, travel writer Pico Iyer, a
panelist at the GLF 2009, describing his experience of this multi faceted
coastal town and the festival, has said ‘Lush tropical gardens, a
mysterious walled city unique in Asia, long lunches with literary
superstars and huge crowds of readers from across the globe: is it any
wonder that every writer longs for an invitation to the Galle Literary
Festival, already one of the literary jewels in Asia's crown?'. The
uniqueness of this festival is the variety on offer. It is not only for
the bookish and high browed, but also for those who like the other fine
things that this coastal town has to offer – its architecture, its rain
forests, its boutique hotels. Needless to say it is all about a
celebration of culture and the arts, in a town of many attractions. |

Now at city
restaurants: Cook your food and eat it too
There are times when we order favourite dish and wish a bit more spicy or
had been roasted for just a minute more. We know that some extra pepper
here and a spoonful of salt there would make is perfect for our taste. But
sadly the uptight fine-dining setting never allowed us to get our hands
dirty.
