Welcome
to another edition of "Creatively Yours"
the newsletter from Creative Travel India
Dear Industry Colleagues :
December.. the last month of the year.. a month for
introspection, for thanks, for tears, for celebrations, for wishes and for
hopes.
The last few weeks saw India go through a tumultuous phase.
What happened in Mumbai may never be erased from people's
memories, but the overwhelming messages of support will only
make sharing the pain easier. Colleagues and competitors from
all over the world wrote in response to our updates on the
Mumbai events. Hundreds of mails were received and that gave
us the assurance that India will emerge strong from the
horrors that had enveloped us. To all of you, thank you for
standing by our land.
Having said this, we as an industry are extremely surprised
though at the types of cancellations we received across the
segments. Some were genuine and understood, but a lot others
showed a lack of awareness or understanding of how large India
is and what a journey to this country means. In this
newsletter, we will hope to dispel a few myths and highlight a
few facts that would make your role in selling India an easier
one.
Over the weeks and months you will see a more aggressive India
emerge to bring you and your clients back to experience what
is one of the most rewarding travel destinations.
We at Creative Travel and our specialist brands - "Signature
Tours", the luxury travel specialist and "Plan it!", the
finest conference management team in India are proud to offer
the best of India and her neighboring countries to the
discerning traveler. With a 31 year award winning history
behind us, we look forward to the opportunity of showing you
what true destination management is all about.
To read more about us, you
can download a copy of our company profile at - http://www.travel2india.com/who-we-are.htm

partners all over the world have shown us. It is with your partnership
that Creative is where it is today. For those of you with whom we have
not had the pleasure of working with, all I can say is try us and see
the Creative magic for yourself.
Through "Creatively Yours" we
hope to keep you informed on the latest news in Team Creative and the

India - A few thoughts to ponder over.....
|
|
Post the events in
Mumbai, we in the Indian travel industry saw many cancellations for trips
planned to India. Some were for immediate travel and are understood, but
we in the industry at large also received cancellations for journeys that
were weeks and months away. That gives us concern not only from a business
perspective for our company specifically, but for the image and welfare of
the destination in general.
One needs to remember that India is a large country. With borders of over
14,103 km (8,794 miles), a coast line of over 7,000 km (4,350 miles), with
territorial borders with 6 different countries, India is more than a mere
country. In reality it is more of a continent.
India is also the 4th richest country in the world.
Country GDP Rankings
1 - United States $11,750,000,000,000
2 - China $7,262,000,000,000
3 - Japan $3,745,000,000,000
4 - India $3,319,000,000,000
5 - Germany $2,362,000,000,000
6 - United Kingdom $1,782,000,000,000
7 - France $1,737,000,000,000
8 - Italy $1,609,000,000,000
9 - Brazil $1,492,000,000,000
10 - Russia $1,408,000,000,000
India has the second largest pool after the United States of students
studying in universities. India produces 3 million graduates, 700,000
post-graduates and 1,500 PhDs per annum. India has the highest number of
qualified engineers and the third largest pool of skilled manpower in the
world.
This is not some tin-pot developing nation. This is a vibrant, live and
growing democracy. Like every free country, we have our problems, but
those problems are far outweighed by our positives. Terrorism is a
problem, but is does not engulf the country as the media would like to
portray. Here is an interesting snippet that came in the press -
http://www.creative.travel/upload/dec08_toi_deaths.jpg
Also, India is physically a large country. See for your self -
-
India is 13.4
times larger in size than the United Kingdom
-
India is 6.5
times larger in size than Spain
-
India is 79.6
times larger in size than Switzerland
-
India is 6
times larger in size than the France
-
India is 9.2
times larger in size than Germany
-
India is 1.2
times larger in size than Argentina
-
India is 1.7
times larger in size than Indonesia
-
India is 3.28 times
larger in size than Egypt
People looked at Mumbai and assumed the entire country was in crisis. The
flight from Delhi to Mumbai takes about 2 hours. That is a
considerable time to fly from one city to another. Let me put this
distance in perspective -
-
London - Paris is a
1 hr 15 min flight
-
London - Barcelona
is a 2 hr 05 min flight
-
London - Frankfurt
is a 1 hr 35 min flight
-
London - Geneva is
a 1 hr 40 min flight
-
London - Rome is a
2 hr 25 min flight
-
New York - Miami is
a 3 hr 15 min flight
-
New York - Chicago
is a 2 hr 56 min flight
-
San Francisco -
Vancouver is a 2 hr flight
-
Bangkok - Kuala
Lumpur is a 2 hr.10 min flight
-
Singapore - Jakarta
is a 1 hr.15 min flight
-
Sidney - Melbourne
is a 1 hr.30 min flight
See, just because
Mumbai was under siege, it did not mean that other parts of the country
were as well. We need our international travel industry partners to take
this message to their clients and put things in perspective. We as a
destination cannot afford to lose business and you as sellers of India
cannot lose the opportunity to sell a package. We are in this together. |

TravelTrade:
India Company Appeals for Support
Creative Travel India, based in New Delhi, is appealing to the travel
industry to support India after the terrorist attacks in Mumbai by
continuing to book travel to India. In an email to former ASTA
president Mike Spinelli, Rajeev Kohli, director of marketing for
Creative Travel India, wrote: "Never has India experienced such a
blatant attack on our guests to our country. We grew up on the
philosophy that the 'guest is god,' which makes us even more certain
that these aggressors are culturally, and perhaps nationally,
outsiders." Click

Christmas
Christmas the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ, is celebrated with
great fervor all over India by the Christians. People decorate their
houses, erect Christmas trees, make cribs with figures of baby Jesus,
Mother Mary, Joseph, the three kings who come to visit the baby and
shepherd boys and their herds grazing around depicting the scenes of
Jesus's Birth in the Bible. They decorate the Christmas tree, hang stars,
gifts and illuminate them. On Christmas day, people enjoy a sumptuous
Christmas lunch. Christmas cakes and wine are served to visitors and
exchanged as gifts among friends and relatives. All the major Indian
cities wear a festive look. Shops and bazaars are decorated for the
occasion and offer attractive bargains.

Good morning,
Just a short note to say a big thank you for the arrangements for our
holiday to northern India. We had the most fabulous time; our guides and
drivers were fantastic and looked after us every step of the way. All
arrangements were excellent and the hotels you chose were perfect. I know
Peter Simpson, our fellow travellers will be getting in touch also to
express his thanks.
This was our fifth trip to India having travelled North, South, East and
West, it certainly is a magical place and I'm sure we'll be back again!
Please could you convey our thanks to everyone involved in our holiday.
Best wishes and thank you

Mr. Thakur
I recently returned from a trip to India and wanted to thank you and your
team for the excellent service provided. This was my first trip to India,
and I was traveling alone, so I was very nervous; I did not need to worry,
your guides and drivers helped me feel safe and well taken care of every
step of the way. All of the guides were punctual (very important!)
friendly and knowledgeable. The entire trip was very well organized and I
thoroughly enjoyed it! Please extend my gratitude to the Creative Travel
guides who helped me, as well as the guides working with the tour groups
you sub-contracted in Goa and Bangalore. All of the guides were
outstanding and should be commended for a job well done.
Thanks again

Hotels in India beef up more security
Hotels and restaurants in India are beefing up security following the
Mumbai terror attacks. The Times of India reports that “not only will all
visitors be frisked, but managements are considering having armed
personnel on different floors of hotels besides the entrance”. "We have
asked all our members to increase security and use the help of outside
agencies to frisk everyone without exception. We need these security
measures," Rajindera Kumar, Federation of Hotels and Restaurants
Association of India (FHRAI) vice-president, said. FHRAI - the largest
association of hotels and restaurants - has more than 3,500 members.
Amongst the measures that hotel chains are putting in place include
physical checking of all vehicles and a three-pronged strategy at the main
porch (frisking and clearing by metal detector for all visitors and X-ray
scanning of all baggage). Barricades will be set up at the entrance of
hotels and managements are likely to look at a higher presence of private
security personnel. |

Guests are not complaining, say we are

Security has become the key concern for hotels. As in case of the
airline industry, travelers would welcome more security, even if it means
more inconvenience. If it means feeling more secure.

Now,
disabled-friendly Agra eases Taj experience
Over the years, disabled visitors who came to see the Taj Mahal could only
gaze at it from the entrance. Now, thanks to the efforts of the
authorities they will be able to get a closer and more intimate view of
the magnificent monument to love. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)
has responded to the needs of physically challenged tourists by
constructing nine ramps at various points in the complex. This is the
latest in a series of initiatives that have been taken to improve the
quality of life of the disabled. The ramps apart, a dozen wheelchairs are
also made available to enable the physically challenged to move
conveniently around the Taj complex. |

Kerala
backwaters now add yachting to tourism attractions
Kerala backwaters, famous for their scenic beauty, snake boat races and
huge house boats, offer you something more these days - a leisure ride on
yachts. The increasing popularity of leisure boating in the state has
opened up new opportunities. Spending a weekend on a boat, with a little
fishing and barbeques on board, is slowly becoming an accepted norm these
days. In Kerala, any boat bigger than 30 feet with cabins would qualify as
a yacht. The Kerala Tourism Development Corp has announced it will set up
a marina at the Bolghatty Isle in Kochi to solve the problem of parking
of yachts and boats. |

year it is being celebrated on the day of the launch of the project. About
1,200 to 2,000 whale sharks visit the Saurashtra coast every year. The
whale sharks migrate from the north coast of Sri Lanka to the Gujarat

India Hosts
Volvo Ocean Race with Elephants on 3rd December
The Volvo Ocean Race made a port call in India. The first of the teams to
reach Kochi was Team Erisscon 4 on 30th November. The inauguration
ceremony of the Race Village was held on 3rd December and the racing teams
were given a "giant" glimpse of India's rich culture. This is the first
time a prestigious sailing event has stopped over in India. And Kochi a
favorite tourist destination in Kerala state hosted the ocean racers. This
is the second of a number of stops for the sailors as they compete in the
37,000 nautical mile ocean race. Around 15 elephants and traditional folk
musicians welcomed them to India. Helen, Volvo Team Official said : "This
is awesome. We are filming it. It is such a great show. Since so many
people have come here, it is really great for the race to get more people
here and it's fantastic." For many of the sailors this was their first
time in India. The yacht race started in Spain in October and will finish
in St. Petersburg, Russia next May. |

Camel Festival,
Bikaner : 10th - 11th January 2009
A lively and colorful event, the Camel Festival is held in Bikaner every
year. The Camel Festival begins
with a colorful procession of bedecked camels against the red sandstone
backdrop of the Junagarh Fort, the festivity advances to the open
sand-spreads of the grounds, followed by the best breed competition, the
tug-of-war contest, camel dance, acrobatics, etc. The camels display
amazing footwork, dancing gracefully to the slightest direction of their
trainers. Bridal, bridles, bejeweled necks, jingling anklets and long,
lanky camel shadow on dusky sands cast a magical spell. Hundreds of
tourists and thousands of locals and dignitaries revel in this
man-and-animal affair organized especially for the tourists. The evenings
close with a different tenor and tempo altogether: a traditional
rendezvous of renowned artistes of Rajasthan and the local folk
performers. The jubilant skirt-swirling dancers, the awe-inspiring fire
dance, and the dazzling fireworks light up the fortified desert city of
Bikaner. |

International
Kite Festival – 14th January
In the year 1989, a new festival was born in India. Called the
International Kite Festival, this event sought to take kite flying to the
tourist by inviting participants from all over the world to competitions
and displays of kites and kite-flying skills. The International Kite
Festival is always held at Ahmedabad on January 14, to coincide with the
festival of Uttarayan or Makar Sankranti. The people of Gujarat celebrate
Uttarayan with a lot of enthusiasm and all business comes to a grinding
halt for a couple of days. It is also a celebration to mark the end of
winter. Kite flying begins at dawn and continues without a pause
throughout the day. Friends, neighbors and total strangers battle one
another for supremacy and cries of triumph rend the air when someone cuts
the line of a rival. A tremendous variety of kites are seen and the
connoisseur can choose precisely what he wants. Come night and the
illuminated kites known as tukals soar into the sky to compete with the
stars. A plethora of designer kites are also put on display. |

Stilt fishing a
huge draw card
Koggala and Ahangama sit on the southern corner of Sri Lanka, close to the
historic city of Galle. They are also famous as a quiet fishing town, far
away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Close to the shore and the
picturesque reef, they are well known for an off shore which serves both
as a tourist and Sri Lankan attraction – stilt fishing. It is a strange
technique of fishing. Nobody knows how or where this technique originated
from. But it works as the stilts are attractive sceneries. Being
attractive and picturesque, these fishing towns are also an ideal base for
snorkeling and diving. Stilt fishing is
famous as a generational occupation among the fishermen. They make their
own stilts on the reef and all stilts have their own fishermen. Stilts are made on the reef nearly twenty metres
from the sea shore. They walk from the shore to these stilts with baskets,
fishhooks and fishing rods. They collect their day's catch into the basket
and carry it ashore. |

Test flight of
'Danfe' held successfully
In what may be an historic event, a group of young engineers of Nepal
successfully conducted a test flight of an ultralight aircraft in the
tourist hub city of Pokhara on December 6, 2008. The students of Pulchowk
Engineering Campus under the Tribhuvan University (TU), under the
leadership of Mr. Bikas Parajuli and Mr. Ganeshram Sinkeman, had built the
aircraft. The aircraft was flown by a Russian pilot Mr. Alexander Maximov.
The aircraft flew four times– each time for less than a minute as
prescribed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). Fitted with an
Austrian engine, the aircraft, which is named as ‘Danfe,’ has indigenous
parts and technologies. Following the successful test flight, promising
engineer Mr. Parajuli said, "As the aircraft flew, I felt that my dreams
had come true." The young engineers had tough times while obtaining permit
to carry out the test flight of the aircraft. According to them, the
aircraft can fly for two hours at a speed of 100 kmph at an altitude of
6,000 feet. |
