Once the
private
hunting
grounds of
the
maharaja,
Bandipur is
one of the
key domains
of the
Bengal tiger
in the
south. It is
about 80
kilometers
from the
city of
Mysore on
route to the
major
tourist
destination
of Ooty. It
was
established
under
Project
Tiger in
1973 by
adding
nearly 800
sq.km to the
Venugopala
Wildlife
Park.
The park
provides a
safe
environment
for several
species of
India's
endangered
wildlife and
also
provides
refuge to
other
threatened
and
vulnerable
species of
flora and
fauna. It
supports a
good
population
of Indian
elephants,
gaur,
tigers,
sloth bears,
mugger
crocodiles,
Indian rock
python, four
horned
antelopes,
jackals and
dholes. To
