Gibbon Sanctuary
– A Hidden
Treasure |
The Hollongapar
Gibbon Sanctuary
is an isolated
protected area
of evergreen
forest in Assam.
It derives its
name from the
Hollong Tree
that forms the
upper canopy of
the forest.
Although the

due to lack of
knowledge about
the area it is
not as popular
with tourists.
In the early
1900s,
artificial
regeneration was
used to develop
a well-stocked
forest,
resulting in the
site's rich
biodiversity.
The park offers
a unique walking
safari through
its rain forests
showcasing a
stunning
diversity of
flora and fauna.
It is home to
the only ape in
India – the
Hoolock Gibbon.
The park boasts
of 7 species of
primates, the
Bengal Slow
Loris, the
Stump-tailed
Macaque,
Northern
Pig-tailed
Macaque, Eastern
Assamese
Macaque, Rhesus
Macaque and
Capped Langur.
Also found at
the sanctuary
are Elephants,
Leopards, Jungle
Cats, Wild Boar,
three types of
Civet, four
types of
Squirrel, and
several other
types of mammal.
At least 219
species of bird
and several
types of snake
are known to
live in the
park.
The Hollongapar
Gibbon Sanctuary
contains India's
only gibbons –
the Hoolock
Gibbons, and
North-eastern
India's only
nocturnal
primate – the
Bengal Slow
Loris.
Definitely a
unique
