  Tiger Tales

Munna is perhaps the most photographed and most easily recognizable tiger in Kanha due to his striking facial markings. He has a dominant ‘CAT’ marking on his forehead. Despite not being particularly big, he had battled his way to dominance, which at times has led to injury. His rise to dominance was tough and included many fights particularly during 2005 and 2006 when he was consolidating his area. In one of the fights he sustained a leg injury giving him a limp, hence he was also named Langda or the limping one.

Munna today is about 15 years old and has been push to the edge of the park by younger and stronger male tigers. He often resorts to lifting cattle and of late has been accused of killing 3 people in the village. Although there is no proof that this act was committed by Munna, conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts have petitioned Kanha tiger reserve authorities to protect Munna from possible attempts by villagers to kill him. Recently villagers conducted a tantric ritual and sacrificed an animal to shoo away the tiger back into the reserve’s core area. Field Director of Kanha made a statement to the press stating that Munna will be protected.

In his statement the Field Director also mentioned that although Munna had been moving through the area where the bodies were found he is not responsible for the killing on June 18th and there is no evidence that the other two people were killed by a wild animal. I guess we will have to wait and watch what happens to Munna.
